Sir Terry Pratchett is obviously famous for the Discworld novels, but he also wrote the occasional non-related story. One was Nation, set on our world, but with an alternative history. An English girl and a native boy are the only inhabitants on a tropical island after a tsunami. They are later joined by more survivors, but Daphne is the only one from her ship.
The Disworld Emporium was succesfully marketing the Discworld stamps, and saw an opportunity for stamps based upon Nation. A few sample stamps were prepared based upon places in the book's text - Port Mercia, and the South Pelagic Protectorate - both part of the British Empire.

Pratchett decided agaisnst the stamps. Nation was a one off book, and he regarded it as 'the best book I shall ever write'. Perhaps he just wanted to protect his brainchild.

For my own amusement I decided to fill out this gap, firstly with some more Port Mercia stamps. The colours are a bit too intense, and text a bit too bold.

The South Pelagic prototype stamp was a bit too small in my opinion, so my short set are somewhat larger,

Inside the hardback book's cover is a worl map. This provided some more territories for stamps, with my designs based on our world stamps which may be familiar to you.

Further Australia

Nearer Australia

and the Reunited states of America (where the War of Independence went the other way).

The Emporium also rigged up another stamp, which marks the final chapter of the book. This design was rejigged as one of the so-called Emberellas. Here is my version of it.

I stress that these were made purely for my own enternatinment and produced just enough for my own need,

I had forgotten about the Nation book, I shall have to re-read it now for mentions of the stamps
New to cinderellas, but learning fast!

There are no specific stamp mentions.
Port Mercia and South Pelagic Islands are places referred to in the text.
The other territories are on the world map in the book. I just invented the stamps

NO!  Don't do that, we need all the views we can get or the forum will disappear from search engine listings...

My guess is that 90% of those views were bots anyway, but who cares... more Terry Pratchett references please, or Trump, or Vance, or Putin, whatever floats a bot's boat!

I think (though I'm not an expert) the search engine will pick up the Terry Pratchett name whether it is preceeded by 'not' or not...

But I agree more posts would be fantastic and guarantees the future of the forum and it's appearance near the top of listings. We will never compete with the broader interest stamp forums as we have a limited interest, specialised subject matter here, but it would be great to be on the first Google page.

We used to have a lot of Discworld interest here and Terry's stamps are still well worth discussing. Now that the Emporium is reducing it's output it might be time to encourage other collectors to join here and welcome them into the broader fantasy world, Discworld stamps are a great introduction to fantasy cinderellas but there is so much more.

Having said that, let's not spoil this Nation thread, perhaps start a Discworld discussion elsewhere on the forum?    Smile
