When I was in London in May, I had the good fortune to visit many Exhibitions that were taking place for the Festival of Stamps.

One such Exhibition was the KGV-Empire Mails Exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery.

I was there on the opening day [May 7th] and was lucky enough to have seen a pre-demonstration of an old Enschede Intaglio Printing press. They were printing the 1929 UPU £1 stamp in blocks of 4 from copies of the original plate. The Press was an old hand-driven wooden device but it produced great reproductions in Blue on thick matt paper. A few of us lucky sods were allowed to hold the wet finished print which was lain on boards. But that was as far as it got.

How I would have liked to have one of those for my GB Exhibition collection....the Ultimate item ? I quickly put the thought out of mind, knowing that they were not for sale......or so I thought.

Just before Christmas, the Exhibition organizers, the BPMA, announced that they would be offering 50, 1 per person on a first-come-first-served basis. They were not cheap. I did not apply by phone as required but did make contact by email when I saw mistakes in their announcement. That was as far as it went.

Then I received an email asking me if I was still interested in a sheet....and I was in shock. I quickly said I was but then heard nothing, until today. After four nervous weeks of no mail, the item finally arrived.

1/11/11 will always remain a special day.

What an excellent addition to a collection. You must be over the moon.

And it's a good example of "Don't Ask, Don't Get". Never be too shy to put yourself forward. And this time it paid off handsomely.

I was lucky, that is certain.
I am still not 100% sure how I was picked out, although I have an idea.

Anyway, I have one. And I never thought I would.

That, is a nice feeling.
