A full sheet of publicity or souvenir stamps for this massive event. Too big for my scanner, I had to piece the image together from four scans.
The fair attracted 44 million visitors, despite WWII resulting in withdrawal of participants under Axis control during 1940. Some of the buildings survived demolition after the event and were used for the 1963 fair.
The British pavilion had a copy of the Magna Carta, but more of interest here were the stamps marking the 100th anniversary of the penny Black. There was also a rare chance to see the 1856 British guians 1c black on magenta.
There some interesting stories about some of the exhibits. Railways were well represented. The Pennsylania Railroad had a locomotive running continuously at on a dynanometer at 60 mph for the entire durion. The Italians had their ETR200 capable of 126mph. Britain does not seem to have progressed at all since them in terma of speed and reliability. The Bendix Lama temple was an identical replica of one in Manchuria built in 1767. Attendences were disappointingly low, so a special show called "the erotic temptations of a young Buddhist priest." It involved multiple nude women!
