This rather charming website devoted to Jack the Station Cat displays a FDC with a (new?) Bala Light Railway stamp, although I couldn't see anything about the stamp on the railway's own website. However, it looks like this could be a new, or possibly re-issued, railway letter stamp.
 
 
(Completely off-topic now, but I was delighted to find, further down the books page on this website, that someone has written not one but two books about the hats worn by Nelson and other naval officers at Trafalgar.)

Hi Mark

I have to give an austere reply to this issue. I visited the Bala Lake Railway in 2007 and 2010. On neither occasion could I buy a stamp and one the first occasion was shown a few "FDCs" which was all they could supply. I got the impression they thought I might be mad to want to post something to myself.

Thanks Steve, that would explain why their website doesn't mention the stamps either. I am not sure there are now any fully operating railway letter services in the original sense, but the Nene Valley and the Bluebell are perhaps closest, and the Mid Suffolk the most enthusiastic. Viewed as souvenirs or fantasies they are still worthwhile. There's also a "light" or garden railway that does some, but I've forgotten what it was. May be in my notes somwhere,

Thats what I meant when in the Brecqhou thread. Collectable certainly, but collectors should look behind the on-line order form and form an opinion of what they are buying.

The other railway is perhaps the Bressingham Garden Railway in Norfolk. I have an image of the stamp/label somewhere.

I believe both the Ffestiniog and Talyllyn Railways operate letter service still; must check on these next time I am there. The welshpool and Llanfair do sell stamps at their shop, but only packets of mixed recent issues. There were no stamps available at the Llanberis Lake Railway in 2007, nor at the Vale of Rheidol.
I suspect that unless they have a large customer base the profits are not worth the effort, and the effort is best put into selling DVDs, mugs, toys and snacks. They are largely staffed by volunteers so time is precious.

My Dad was a British Rail employee and we would be treated to all sorts of rail-related activities in our school holidays, some of the line names mentioned in this thread are making me quite nostalgic.

Crewe Railway Hereitage Museum located a bit north of the main station, but a real ****** to find by car, has or at least recently had a Travelling Post Office coach on display. Just like the one in that b7W film with poetry by Betjeman.
