How do you tell if a Penny Black is a May 2nd issue instead of a May 6th issue?

I do not believe there is any difference in the stamps. Its accepted that the stamps were dispatched to post offices on 1st May, and were to go on sale on the 6th. Some offices sold a few prematurely, and there have been 1st May covers. The stamps issued were all from plates 1a, 1b and 2.
On cover you could perhaps identify one from prior to the 6th, but this would need proper professional authentification |
