I was rather surprised that a small collection could be made from shoe polish adverising stamps. Quite a number of different brands and large numbers of stamps in each set. Assuming that you got a new stamp with each in, how many tins of polish were you getting through each year? But 100 years ago the well to do wouldn't step outside without a highly polished pair of shoes. Each member of the family, which may have several children, wouuld all have shoes for different occasions in different leather colours. And the boy who shined the shoes left out side the room doors in a hotel could get through a lot of polish.

![]() The stickmen on these take me back to childhood. It those dim and distant days TV meant just BBC and ITV, both in b/w. Children's TV was limited to children's hour just before the early news' and it was only 50 or 55 minutes. As a filler in the Radio Times listing would be a 5 minute cartoon. No details. Of course as a kid I expected Tom & Jerry at least. All too often it was some cartoon from behind the tron curtain with stick men. Thwy just weren't funny. So disappointing. |
