 LOL

Have you discovered Barry Brignell in Cambridge, Carole?

No I hadn’t

However I have now !

https://www.brignellbookbinders.com/

The book I had a hand in, about Med pottery in Cambridgeshire was only issued as a soft back and the pages of my copy came lose quickly and I’ve always wanted it bound as a hardback. This might be the place to go

I’m not quite at making real books point, I made a miniature book that you can use as a decoration, but it was fun.

Best thing I did when lockdown eased slightly was made a box that works like a Jacobs ladder.

Barry is a wonder and in normal times runs tutorials at his workshop, well worth investing in.

Your Jacobs ladder box sounds intriguing!

Is that Medieval pottery or Mediterranean pottery?

There is also a bookbinder at the Printing Museum in Norwich who would be able to fix your book, once the world gets back to normal  :-)

It looks like Autumn Stampex 2021 could happen

September 29 - October 2

Anyone up for it if it does ?

I know we don’t normally do the autumn one, but perhaps this once?

BUT definitely looking forward to Spring 2022.

Back in 2004 I was part of the Discworld stamps presence when, as a result of using their perforator for the Going Postal book publicity photography, we were asked if we'd like to share the stand for the Bath Postal Museum at that year's Stampex.

The Merchants stamps had just been introduced and Alan and I took along a 'pull-up' display board to help attract attention. We made a lot of friends that year among printers and stamp magazines. Our stamps were very well received and resulted in features in Gibbons magazine and a good buzz generally among collectors - the area in front of our stand was probably the busiest that year - there was a real sense that something special was going on.

Since then several of the members here have met up at the February event (on the Saturday) over the past years for a chat and a coffee and then on to a pub or restaurant when the event closes.

In the early days we used to comment on how we were among the youngest (and noisiest!) group in the coffee bar - but not so much now  :-)

There are always displays at the event - frequently these will include cinderella material - and there are plenty of retailers there who sell to the public - it's not all about the trade. It is fun though to chat to the traders about how popular and sought after some of the cinderellas we collect have become...

The Royal Mail usually have a presence there, with often a newly-launched issue being available, and they also have a facility where you can post an item in a special postbox and have it franked with their Stampex commemorative cancellation.  I am not sure whether the Royal Mail are going to be there at the autumn event this year, when I spoke to them last time there was another show that they were going to focus on instead - but then everything has changed since.

There is usually information online - Gooogle for Stampex - which will give you more detail.

I should be going to the February event, assuming it goes ahead.  Every year I try to twist Alan's arm to come along too but it either coincides with his birthday weekend or the rugby...

Is anyone here going to Stampex this weekend?

It's FREE on Saturday - but - I have seen online that you need to pre-book a ticket as visitor numbers are being limited.

Have fun!

Not for me as I won't wear a mask for the journey down on public transport. It is now 18 months since I caught a train or bus, somthing we would have done twice a week previously. When they remove that restriction I will be hopping straight back on

Most train companies and public transport do not insist on masks being worn if you do not want to.

The government have left it to individual transport companies to decide whether they insist on mask wearing and so no-one seems to know whether they should wear a mask or not.

I have travelled a fair bit on coach, tube and train recently and generally there are very few people wearing masks.
