Am I the only one invited to call on the 4th of next month? Or just the first to ask?

I too have an invitation. The stamp bore the initials H. L&S. at either side at the top, and mine had the initials C and B in the lower left and right corners. I cannot identify the chap illustrated, but he looks as though he might well tend towards a somewhat dissolute  lifestyle. The flowers upper left and lower right might be Ipomea Violacea, aka Heavenly Blue, or Morning Glory. These plants, if I've identified them correctly, have psychoactive properties.
Then there's the name Sanderson. Some Sanderson fabric designs were associated with artists within the group.
So, We have Bloomsbury... Perhaps the Bloomsbury Group. It has been said that some members of the group indulged in experiments with drugs. We have the Morning Glory flowers. The beautifully gold edged card inside contains an invitation to an appointment with Mrs Sanderson to discuss arrangements for her security...
(Quite cheered me up for a moment, as I'm looking for a good job in the security industry! I thought I'd had a reply to one of my CV's for a minute.)

So apart from the usual mystery of who's produced this lovely stamp and sent this unusual invitation, we have the implied mystery of just who was this Mrs Sanderson, and what could have been her address at the time... Not to mention the other details of the stamp, some of which I can't quite make out like whatever the thing at the top center is... my bad.
Finally the postmarks. The realworld one was Warrington, and the ficton Bloomsbury London with something I can't make out in the crossbar.

Very nice, and it's had me looking some stuff up today, so educational as well as an attractive puzzle!

If and when I ever move house it will be to somewhere where the post does not arrive a day or two later than other people. I am, of course, hoping to receive one of these.

I also received one of these interesting letters from Mrs Sanderson.

Thank you very much to the mysterious sender.

Much the same as received by others, invitation in my case "to discuss representation of her media business interests", cinderella stamp as described with a Bloomsbury, London cinderella frank and JF in the lower left and right corners, Royal Mail Christmas 2012 1st Class stamp franked 08-01-2013 at Royal Mail Warrington Mail Centre.

Here is what I have gleaned from a little research.

The writing across the centre of the cinderella frank is a London postcode in mirror writing, "through the looking glass" indeed.

The postcode is W1T 3NG.

This is the postcode of http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?ftid=0x48761b2b085e2411:0xed9758568fbd0af7&q=London+W1T+3NG - the Sanderson Hotel in Berners Street, Bloomsbury.

The Sanderson's signature English tea ceremony is its http://www.sandersonlondon.com/en-us/#/explore/?id=/sanderson-london-mad-hatters-tea/ - Mad Hatter's Tea .

(The Sanderson achieved most recent notoriety in 2007 as the scene of an Amy Winehouse blow-out session - fourth paragraph in http://blog.easytobook.com/cool-stuff/notorious-events-in-london-hotels/ - this article - oddly enough immediately below a reference to the Cadogan Hotel of late Victorian notoriety in the case of Oscar Wilde as immortalised in http://rinabeana.com/poemoftheday/index.php/2008/03/18/the-arrest-of-oscar-wilde-at-the-cadogan-hotel-by-john-betjeman/ - the poem by John Betjeman )

The Mad Hatter's Tea Party is an episode in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

According to http://lewiscarrollsociety.org.uk/pages/aboutcharlesdodgson/works/alice.html - the Lewis Carroll Society , the manuscript text of what was then titled Alice's Adventures under Ground was completed on 10 February 1863, 150 years ago next month.

Not sure if any of the above tells some part of the tale regarding these letters and I've got no leads as yet on the portrait or the initials "H. L. & S." but perhaps some others can take up the scent.

The Alice connection seems to crop up twice. I'm wondering (pun intended) if Alice's Adventures Underground may reference a link to the London tube system. I am not too familiar with this.
Or does the Looking Glass postmark transform this to Overground - street level.
Are there any Alice references on the stamps?

Could it be Oscar Wilde?

I hope I get mine tomorrow and its not solved by then

In 1810 Theodore Hook perpetrated the Berners Street Hoax having made a bet with a friend, Samuel Beazley, that he could transform any house in London into the most talked about address within a week. He did this by sending out thousands of letters in the name of Mrs Tottenham, a wealthy lady, of 54 Berners St. to various dignitaries, shops and tradesmen requesting that they attend the address or ordering goods and services. On Monday, 26th November the address was inundated with people responding to these letters beginning with chimney sweeps and including barbers, grocers, artists and The Lord Mayor of London.
So many people arrived that at one point it was almost impossible to move in the street. The police eventually took charge but the crowds were not dispersed until night-time. The papers were full of the story and it was soon realised that it was a gigantic hoax but it was never proved by the authorities that Hook was the perpetrator.

Our 'invites' are in the style of the hoax letters and seem to make specific references to our professions with the stamp bearing our individual initials.

It is Hook who is depicted on the stamp. 54 Berners Street ultimately became incorporated into what is now the Sanderson Hotel, a luxury spa resort. H.L. and S. may just stand for Healthy Living and Spa.

Well done, Daniel. That's brilliant research.

Based on it, I'd guess that "H. L. & S." is "hook, line and sinker".

I can read the signature on the invitation card more clearly on that scan, Steve, than I can on the invitation card I received myself.

It's another clue to Theodore Hook of course, him being T. Hook and the signatory of our invitations being H. Took.

Although, if I had been able to decipher it, it might have taken me down an erroneous Hobbit hole of inquiry rather than to the correct answer that Daniel found.

The one I received today has the usual invitation then adds " She wishes to discuss some private investigations of rather a delicate nature with you"
It is then signed as above in Steve's post. The lower left and right corners contains "J" and "H"

Hi All,
I was lucky enough to receive an intriguing invitation myself yesterday. The envelope and finely gilded invitation contains most of the same details as already reported but my letter was posted in the Bath/Bristol area, the bottom corner letters on my stamp are 'NK' (what an uncanny coincidence!) and Mrs Sanderson wishes to discuss island holidays in the Bristol Channel with me, I'm on it!

Some very clever work has gone into this and I am astonished by the high standard of detective work employed. Didn't bother with any of that stuff myself because my plan was to jump in any black cab as the driver would surely know Mrs Sanderson and her residence.

However I'll have to disuade her from her original plan as I would much prefer to take her up the Orkneys.

Thank you on both counts Big smile

The date of the hoax varies from one source to another but I dismissed the date given in Wikipedia in favour of a much more detailed account from The Museum of Hoaxes:

http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/archive/permalink/the_berners_street_hoax/ - http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/archive/permalink/the_berners_street_hoax/

At the bottom of this excellent article is a link to a contemporary account, The Annual Register for the Year 1810 (published in 1812) which gives, one assumes, the correct date.

I doubt that even if the entire forum descended on The Sanderson Hotel we could replicate the chaos of the original event!

Hook sounds like a very interesting man but he clearly had too much time on his hands. He went on to found the John Bull newspaper and the biography 'The Man Who Was John Bull ' is currently still in print.

Actually its a triple negative.

And I wouldn't go to Somerset to post to myself. There's an envelope on my desk from another stamp producer postmarked Bath.

The one I received yesterday has the usual invitation then adds " She wishes to discuss the care and culture of her pet oysters with you."  It is then signed as above in Steve's post. The lower left and right corners contains "C" and "M".Postmarked January 8 from Warrington Mail Centre with a bilingual Welsh/English airmail sticker.

My sleuthing is centered around the limited number of people that know my twin interests of oysters and modern Welsh philately, have my address (CA Forum folks and one or two here whose cinderellas I have subscribed to), and who have my name very slightly mis-spelled in their database.  Tongue

I originally suspected Steve, though others are possible...

Don't thank me.

A scan of my stamp is attached and it indicates (to me at least) based on the evidence so far available, that each recipient's stamp might be a different colour as well as carrying our different initials. It looks like everybody has a personalised stamp; initilas and possibly colour too. So have we all got a stamp that is utterly unique? Or has the perpetrator got an extra copy of each for his/her own collection. Either way these must be quite quite rare.

It needn't be any of the usual suspects...

The story itself is not so complex, simply meticulously researched and incredibly well presented.

And with a little help from someone with a list of addresses and a couple of facts about the intended targets' interests the rest would be relatively easy.

Just think about how Berners St Hoax was perpetrated. The bet specified that Hook had to make a house the most talked about in London within a week. This was in the days before the universal penny post. There was a postal service within London, and this had to be officially sanctioned. But in those days the cost was bourne by the addressee who could refuse the letter, and there were no targets to be reached in regard to delivery time.
And they had no recourse to Facebook or Twitter.

Surely it's time whoever produced these little gems not only fessed up but also took a bow...

To produce individually customised stamps is a sure sign of dedication/madness in itself - but to add to this individual invitations and such an intricate back story, takes our little bits of fun to a new level.

If I had done it then at least one of the invites or personalised stamps would have ended up going to the wrong destination - so it's not me, honest.  I just don't have the patience.

But there is something about the cancellation on the cover - the style, fonts and, most of all, the execution when compared to previous covers - that immmediately pointed the finger in a particular direction.

So please take a bow... you know who you are Wink

Come on Steve.  'Fess up.  And, as Colin says, take a bow.

And Keith, some of us want to know what Mrs Sanderson invited you to do for her.....

Near enough and presumably for a similar estate agent-y sort of reason as applies to West Hampstead and Kilburn. LOL

No... I remain South Woodford Braham... I guess my recent stamp trades slipped my mind. Embarrassed

I CONFESS! IT WAS ME!

I did it, its all my work, with a bit of help from one of the regulars here. I am delighted to have fooled so many people for so long.

And anyone else who says it was them is an enormous fibber  LOL

I'm sorry it's so boring Hilary but she wants to discuss " organising activities for the pensioners of the parish".   The cheek of it!

Come on now Hilary, admit it.

My invitation card asks that I might discuss care and maintenance of central heating with Mrs Sanderson...

Make of that what you want, but I am sure I would remember if I had been discussing my plumbing with Hilary  Wink

If Steve (or whoever Wink) is the shy, retiring, type and doesn't want to take credit for their work then we really shouldn't bully him (or her, though that is unlikely Wink) into declaring it. This is (sorry, could be Wink) the same person who designed both of the winning Anniversary stamps and didn't want to make a fuss about that either.

Why shouldn't this card and its creator be allowed to always remain a mystery?  Shocked

But I'd like to display it correctly in my albums, alongside other work by the same author... I'm sure other members feel the same way.
On the other hand, if I'd produced this wonderful cover I'd want to wait and see...

Is anyone actually going to go to Simpsons next Monday 4th Feb? ... I've got a time of 14.15.

Will the Author be there for a late lunch?

I doubt it. Don't forget that the original was a hoax.

The original was a hoax but that didn't stop people turning up on the day...

I think you should go Charles, make a racket, get arrested, and when you are hauled up in court blame the mystery perpetrator here, who might then be so wracked with guilt we could get a full confession, and you might possibly achieve celebrity status  LOL

The perpetrator could, like Hook, be at a window in the building across the street on the appointed day. Nowadays this appears to be an Italian restaurant. The GNOCCHI DI PATATE CON RAGÚ DI VITELLO sounds interesting.

I think they would claim that I was at the wrong address...
And I'm far too old and fat to go getting arrested... that's a young mans game.
A spot of lasagna isn't out of the question though... much more my style.

It was 2 years before a suspect, namely Theodore Hook, was proposed for the original hoax. Even then he did not admit to the hoax, though there were hints of his responsibility for it in some of his later writing.

Did anyone from the Forum turn up to witness what might happen? There remains a possibility that the forum members who received invites were but a small proportion of those who actually did. Those others may not have benefitted from the collective wisdom, detective skills, and openness of the Forum; and turned up.

Don't hold your breath.

Twice this week I have had collectors who are not members here get in contact via Fecbook, and another who IS a member here get in touch by phone - both to discuss points recently made on threads posted here.

I am not sure everyone understands the purpose of an online forum.

-------------
I began this forum as a place to discuss and share ALL cinderella stamps. It is my first forum and is not perfect BUT I will endeavour to make it the best available.

Any positive help appreciated!

Given that the early illustrations on this thread have vanished, could any posters re-do their images on here?  Thanks! Wink

I'll try to find my letter but, in the meantime, Colin shows his stamp on page 6 and Olfella shows his invitation on page 8 of this thread.
