Some rogues are lovable rogues, especially if the rogue is a con-man. Gaston Fontanille alias Delandre was one such rogue.
Among his crimes were selling fake noble titles and a forming a chemical company with many notable directors, none of who knew they held such a position!
However he is best known for his French military vignettes. During WWI he commisioned a number of noted artists to produce these labels for the various regiments. Some 4000 were produced. Many were packaged up and sold to collectors.
He was commisioned to produced Red Cross charity labels, which were his downfall after he forgot to hand over the maney raised. He died in jail in 1923.
His productions seem to be readily recognisable, despite the different artists involved. I have doubts that the last two of these illustrated are Delandres. Well worth colecting.

That was very interesting, Steve, so much so that I purchased some Smile Here are my examples, the first 4 are similar to the ones in Steve's post, the others I purchased as part of a job lot, described as by Delandre I cannot verify that they are by him, they might just be similar:

I believe that the CSC published a 4 volume catalogue of Delandres some time ago but that it is now out of print. One volume came up on eBay some months ago and sold for £40.

Here is a page of them that I acquired recently, I don't fully understand the notes at the top.

Sadly,  much of the above Delandre information is incorrect.  There are six Delandre catalogues and all are available at Website posterstamps.org.uk   The CSC has not produced any catalgue.  Delandre comitted suicide in Marseille in 1927.

If its the intro that I wrote that is factually incorrect, its probably because it was pieced together from several sources in order to present a consensus history. Gaston Fontanille was almost certainly what can be called a 'dodgy geezer' and as such facts may be anything but, especially if he was the original source. Any corrections would be welcomed by me.

The Delandre vignettes are nevertheless attractive and distinctive Cinderellas. I wa very impressed by the display at Stampex in February, and fascinated by the dedication of collectors for this material.

In fairness to Steve, all readily available sources for information on Delandre give the date of his death as 1923 and this includes Wikipedia and eBay Buying Guides and I cannot find an English language source that suggests 1927. I'm not saying that CSC73 is wrong, indeed he intimates a knowledge of Delandre, but we can hardly be blamed for errors that are commonly repeated in the public domain. I suggest CSC73 contacts Wikipedia to correct this error and/or gives us his own potted biography of Delandre.

A mixed bag of Delandres that came my way. Waht is not apparaent from the scans is that the gold and silver do indeed have a gold and silver metallic finish. I like 'em

A few more of these beauties.

I see these for sale frequently, but prices vary wildly. I do not think that the eBay starting or Buy Now price is as much a reflection on the rarity of any particular stamp, but more what the seller hopes to get for it. So patience will win out, because more afforadable ones will turn up.

Ideally I would like to classify what I have in my collection, which does grow slowly, but when the price of the reference books means a choice between the books and the stamps, then the stamps win hands down.

Steve, don't you ever worry that by sharing your collecting habits here you are increasing the odds that someone here will outbid you on eBay and other sites? These are such colourful and detailed stamps that I am certain I will not be the only one looking out for them now, sorry!

By way of returning the favour, is there a single stamp or a favourite genre that has so far eluded you that I could look out for you?

No problems. I have a good selection of these in my collection, and can see no way I will ever complete anything. So competition and oubidding will just curb any obsession and spending. Be nice if others enjoyed these too.
As for your offer, just keep a lookout for those sunday school albums beyond ebay. :)

Are there fakes of Delandre's fakes?

He has a recognisable style and it would be easy to mock up, although expensive to print  considering the number of colurs and metallic inks used?

Did Delandre have his own printing press I wonder?

Ironically while there is a cerain style that says 'Delandre' even at first glance, no two stamps seem to share a design. He used a lot of different artists and mush of the text seems invented for the stamp rather than a stock typeface.
So it would be possible to fake these with a totally new design and they would sit comfortably with any 'real' ones. Just get the paper, inks and perforations correct.

And more.

I am not sure whether all these are genuine Delandres. There's some British regiments and some rather exotic ones here too, so did Deleandre extend his output beyond France? A good online reference would be useful.

Here is a sheet or part sheet of Delandres that I have just acquired. I have never seen such a thing before and judging by the way they are arranged, every which way to each other, I can't imagine that they were intended to be sold that way. Since the sheet was not sold as being by Delandre I managed to buy it quite cheaply.

Still adding Delandres to my collection as and when I manage to buy a few for minimal outlay.
These are for French infantry regiments, but it will be obvious that there are many more to add.

They definitely have atmosphere.

Do you have the catalogue for these ?

Posted By: Steve
Date Posted: 17 May 2016 at 09:13
I don't have a catalogue. In fact I believe there are six, produced by Charles Kiddle priced at £20 each or thereabouts. He left a link here 3 years ago for mail order but that URL is out of use. The CSC have some on their http://www.cinderellastampclub.org.uk/publications.html" rel="nofollow - publications page but not all - and you don't see what exactly you get for your money.

Personally if I had studued these I would have put my findings up on the web. By privately publishing much of the cost would be productions costs as it would be a small print run. On the web its there for all to see, not just those with £120 spare. On the web anything new can be added immediately, but a published catalogue can be out of date from the day it is sent to the printers. Any revisions can only be by an addendum slip or wait for a reprint. I would like my work to be appreciated by anybody.

I would prefer to spend that on more Delandre stamps. There are so many that there is littel chance of ever completing any series.Best to enjoy what I get. And I do enjoy these because with the range of artists used there is so many styles of design and artwork - endless variety.

I have now managed to acquire 3 volumes of the Delandre catalogues relatively cheaply. Reading through the vast amount of information it appears that, contrary to my previous post illustrating a part sheet, the stamps were indeed generally available in sheets supplied in brown envelopes. However, at least on eBay where Cinderellas are commonly sold singly, they are extremely rarely sold as sheets.

Anyway, here is a recent job lot featuring Red Cross Delandres:

After much searching I have found, online, a French newspaper, Le Petit Parisien, from 17th June 1927 concerning the death (suicide) of our old friend Delandre or Gaston Fontanille. There is even a picture of him!

The story is on page 1 and you can zoom in on the article.

The headline reads:

The Crook Fontanille
researched in vain for two years
It Was Suicide... Incognito

Having gone on the run over a previous scam (involving silver foxes), he moved to Marseille in 1925 under yet another assumed name, Baron Edmond Picarat. There he began another scam involving setting up a charity for leprosy. On the verge of being arrested he committed suicide by taking poison on 10th March 1927. This final identity was, perhaps, his greatest success despite his failure and despite his suicide! He was buried as Picarat and in L'Echo d'Alger for 11th March 1927 (in contrast to the headline in Le Petit Parisien) the headline ran: A Knight of Industry.

The connection to Fontanille was not made for several months when his body was exhumed and re-buried under his real name. Gaston Fontanille was a conman well before he produced his stamps under the name Delandre which was just one of many names that he used in his lifetime. He was never a successful conman, in 1923 it was reported that he had been arrested 15 times!

The stamps, of course, also another scam, represent his lasting legacy.

Here is an interesting item that I picked up recently. It is an envelope, quite small, about 2" by 3", with a stamp promoting French Red Cross stamps. I assume it contained further Delandres originally but it came with this leaflet advertising an album with 400 stamps!

There has been an important new Delandre discovery. Up until now, it had been thought that Delandre ceased producing stamps in 1917. New research shows that a series of Cinderellas known as Bonne Annee and produced in 1919/1920 were in fact produced by Gaston Fontanille. A new book, which I have ordered, also give a new timeline for Fontanille. One of the main source is likely to be French newspapers of the time, more readily available to French speakers. I look forward to reading it.

The book is called Delandre and the Bonne Annee 1920 Stamps by R G Lafreniere, published by Bird Bear Press.

These 2 are examples from Fontanille's Porte Timbre series for France. Porte timbre literally means to carry a stamp and a space is usually left blank to carry a small definitive postage stamp as seen below.
