My renewal for the hosting etc of the askmeaboutstamps website is coming up for renewal and, at £400 inc VAT, I'm afraid I can't afford it on my little old pensioner's income!  Given that I've not updated it for at least 18 months and nobody ever seems to mention it or use it I suspect it is a tool that we all welcomed some years ago but which has now passed its useful life

So, I've cancelled the contract.  It will expire on 5 November..  If you need any info such as the fadcinating text or the images of all the stamps you don't have I suggest you get to the site and copy what you need.

Thanks to Steve, in particular, for all his help with the site in the olden days.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith, sorry to hear this news. It was an excellent reference source and I used it many times to sort out my relevant collections. It is a shame that it couldn't be added to this forum in some way. I fear that some of the stamps will be forgotten.

Maybe we'll get to see you again at one of our Stampex visits!

Sad news but inevitable and totally understandable.

Websites, like forums, are not a free resource and without regular use and updating interest in them will fade away.

Thank you Keith and Steve Tandy for all your help with helping promote our hobby and the many stamp-makers who were around all those years ago - we were (and always will be) very grateful.

Why not put the whole website up (for FREE !) on geocities in Samoa?

Why pay 400 quid, when these nice folks will let you have a site free?

You shouldn't lose those gems!

Sad sad news... I still visit the askmeaboutstamps website often and think it is a great page with lots of useful informations...

Will this forum ( http://cinderellastampsforum.com/" rel="nofollow - http://cinderellastampsforum.com ) continue or is that part of "the hosting deal"?

Thanks for all the great work that has been put into askmeaboutstamps...

The 'askme' website and this forum are not connected, and the forum will continue as long as people visit here and support it with their posts and comments.

There is little doubt that the ease of mass social media is replacing interest in forums but I have yet to see a platform which is as useful for archiving information.  It saddens me to see people making comments on Facebook pages which are gone within a week and not easily recoverable.

Alan and I still use the askmeaboutstamps site to check information on our own stamps and we will also be very sad to see it go.

Hopefuly other websites will grow in its place.

Hello,

Maybe you already knew,
but there are "captures" of this site currently on the "internet archive wayback machine". Big smile

I do not know neither why, nor how, the site "http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com"
was integrated into these snapshot operations on this internet memory. A mystery for me...

But we can still find almost all the informations.
The text is OK, I think so, but most of the images are missing
(certainly the images that were hosted on a third-party site).

However, I invite you to go and search this site in which we sometimes find old nuggets
that have disappeared ... Cry

All the best,

Mhhh, I believe that in fact it is the folder "http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/wp-content/uploads"
which has not been saved completely ... to be checked ... The full list of saved uploads appears to be here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.askmeaboutstamps.com/wp-content/uploads//*" rel="nofollow - http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.askmeaboutstamps.com/wp-content/uploads//* Not easy to navigate in this internet archive, but, hey ... better than nothing! Beer

**************WARNING !!**************

BE CAREFUL: select ONLY the files that have the word "image" in the "mimetype" column!
Otherwise (for example if you select a file with a "text / html" mimetype) this will return
to a "justhost.com" page later.

And my antivirus has detected a problem !!!

Regards,
