In 1934 there was the London International Stamp Exhibition held at the Royal Horticultural Society Hall in London. The Junior Philatelic Society ran a competition to design a British airmail stamp. This was won by J Bickerton Sifton and the stamp was produced for this exhibition printed by De La Rue and perforated on a Grover machine. There are 6 colours, green, red, brown, orange, blue and violet. They is also a variety of perforations and an imperforate version. In addition, they are available unwatermarked and with a single or multiple airplane watermark. I hope that you can see the single watermark on the reverse of the stamps shown.

For the 1961 Stampex Liechtenstein issued 2 beautifully engraved sheets depicting some of their stamps. They were reprinted from the original dies by the Austrian State Printing Office in Green and in black. They came in a folder depicted here:

For the Europhilex Stamp Exhibition London in 2015 someone, possibly Rushstamps, had the clever idea of overprinting the 1940 sheets printed for the 27th Philatelic Congress, Bournemouth for the centenary of the 1d Black. 2015 being the 175th anniversary. The overprints were in black and metallic blue.

The 1940 sheets are nicely engraved and feature the 1d Black and a 1d Blue. Presumably they only one die but, interestingly, Rowland Hill did produce a test sheet of the 1d black printed in blue! Only 3 copies are known to still exist including one used example that came from Downing Street!

Here is the original cellophane envelope in which the original sheets were sold in 1940 along with an elongated version of the penny blue, possibly a proof:

The best reference work is British Stamp Exhibitions by Glenn Morgan and Graham Wilson. An online pdf version of the excellent and well illustrated 3rd edition can be found here:

For 1940 a philatelic exhibition was planned in London but was abandoned due to the war. These Chalon portrait sheets depicting Queen Victoria, printed by Perkins Bacon, were prepared for use:

For Stamp World London 1990 stocks of these (unoverprinted) sheets were discovered and inserted into the exhibition catalogue.

Back to 1940 and an exhibition was rescheduled at Lancaster House for 6th to 14th May in aid of The Lord Mayor's Red Cross and St John Fund and these sheets were duly overprinted in red:

Here is a very rare half-overprinted sheet:

This is the Cinderella produced for The British Philatelic Exhibition at Seymour Hall in London in 1967. The envelope contained this rather amusing letter

Hmm, a Welsh Cinderella from 1967, could this have been a young Steve's first effort?

Not me, honest Guv.

But I think I know what they are referring to in the back of my mind. If only I could remember what and where I have them

Here are a few examples of the winning design for a proposed Ideal-Stamp for the 1912 Jubilee International Stamp Exhibition held in London. It was an adaptation of a design by Henry Schubert. Issued in various colours. In fact, the scarlet pair are reprints, slightly larger, printed for the Paris International Stamp Exhibition in 1913.

Strictly speaking not a philatelic exhibition item but since it appears in British Stamp Exhibitions by Glen H Morgan and Graham M Wilson, available online, I feel justified to include it here. It was printed by the Crown Agents Stamp Bureau at their stand at The Daily Mail Schoolboys and Girls Exhibition held at Olympia from 27th December 1965 to 8th January 1966. It was printed, as you can read, on the Perkins Bacon and Petch printing press used to print the Penny Black. It depicts the Thomas De La rue British Honduras one shilling from 1866. Each sheet took 3 minutes to produce! Rare.

For 1960, there were also 5 sheets, the other 2 being light blue and pink. Both of these designs are straightforward but lack imagination.

These American versions of the London International Exhibition stamps for 1950 are better quality and better designed but this was just 5 years after the end of WWII.
