When I began collecting the fantastic Cinderellas designed by Mr. Gerald King (stamps, covers, proofs, trials, etc.), I spent quite a lot of time on the Internet searching and reading about Cinderellas (including posts on this Forum and "Ask Me About Cinderella Stamps "( http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.askmeaboutstamps.com/ )).

Among other things, I used a great deal of time to identify the various catalogues, books etc. about the GK Cinderallas.

The purpose of this forum topic is to gather the various reference materials for Gerald King Cinderellas  ... thus helping new Gerald King collectors with getting started.

Please feel free to add other GK reference materials below, if you have any further from your own collection ...

I have some copies of magazine articles relating to the stamps which Gerald has sent me from time to time.  Should I ever find them in the heaps of "stuff" I'll see if I can get copies posted.

The "Curiouser and Curiouser" catalogue that Jesper illustrated above seems to be a real rarity.  Repeated searches keep turning up lists of people right around the world who would sell me one if only they had any.  I only need one for completeness as I do have Gerry's original artwork that went to the printers at the start of the litho printing process,  If any of you find one snap it up.

The listings are different to those in the later catalogues and help to throw light on the earlier issues.  One thing it doesn't mention is colours.  Possibly because the third printing (coloured stamps on coloured and white papers) involved six colours and four papers for each stamp - so 24 varieties of EACH stamp!  You'd need a big catalogue to list them!

I've stumbled across a real gem of a reference list.

Not sure of the date but it is a one-page illustrated list of the first printing of the Alice stamps and their cancellations.  It covers both Wonderland and Looking Glass Land.  Corrections have been made in Gerry's handwriting.  It is the best (and only) list I have so far to catalogue the first and second printings of Wonderland.  I've put the scan on Photobucket and, hopefully, http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii121/TheBywoods/Gerry%20King%20Victorias/1st%20Print%20Catalogue_zpsknwtqdcx.jpg" rel="nofollow - you can find it here .  I hope you can read it.  The original is just a little smaller than A4.

I thought Colin said he'd beat us to death if we posted pictures directly to the Forum?

Anyway, Gerry confirms that this is, indeed, the first illustrated "catalogue". Dating from about 1966 it replaced an earlier version which was just a list. He had trouble fitting in all the pictures hence the strange format.

Its not a direct post. Its an image link to your Photobucket. Why you don't do that Keith I will never know, becasue its the easiest part of the whole process

Hi Keith,

I have the same (original) list in my collection... On top of the list someone (Gerald I believe) has written "Catalogue for the 2nd Printing Rouletted"....

I also have the (original) list for the 1st printing (smaller than A4, with no pictures, only text describing the different stamps)... and with the text "Catalogue for the 1st Printing" written on the top of the page
(same hand writing as on the other list)... on the back of the list the following is written:
"Original Catalogue 1965, dealing with the first printings, large format, Black on coloured papers, Perf. 11 3/4"...

Best regards,
Jesper

No Keith, it's a visual hobby and it goes without saying that pictures bring the forum to life.

Post up as many links to your Photobucket account as you want to, all pictures welcome!

I began this forum as a place to discuss and share ALL cinderella stamps. It is my first forum and is not perfect BUT I will endeavour to make it the best available.

Any positive help appreciated!

I had the pleasure to do some perforating for Gerald some number of years ago. Even better to have had several phone conversations with his as well. Nonetheless, it would appear that you have quite a wonderful resource available here, Jesper, for assisting others. Thanks for sharing!

Any chance of a scan Jesper?  This is an important list and it'd help to see it.

The note on the illustrated sheet must be wrong.  The 2nd printing didn't appear until late 1970.  So Gerry's catalogue which he dates to 1966 must be of the first printing.

It's odd about the perforation note.  The 1st printing was imperf.  The second was rouletted.  But I have a collection of 1st & second printings which is split into three.  The first is imperf 1st printings; the third is rouletted second printings.  In between are stamps which are quite obviously 1st printing but are perforated (somewhat roughly in places).   But I can't find my perforation gauge - grrrrrrrrr.  Can anyone else throw any light on any perforated 1st printing?

How thrilling to see so much background information, truly a goldmine for a serious King collector!

What became, I wonder, of the Peter Blake painting referred to above?

Thank you for posting these materials JepserDK.

I've discussed this with Gerry to try to get some better clarity.  But, as he says, it was 50 years ago and, as it was only a bit of fun, he wasn't keeping records.  But he can remember names!  So.

1st printing (1965, black on coloured papers) exists in at least two states.  Imperforate and P11.  Some of the printed sheets from Red Lodge Press, were "sent to Harry Rooke (Cinderella journalist for magazine "Stamp Collecting Weekly") who in turn sent them to someone who had a perforating machine.  They came back with at least two thirds badly perfed right into the design.  I never used this guy again as I by this time had been contacted by Dave Stirling who had his own machine and was much better at it; he did all my stuff after that."  My own collection has perf and imperf.  Some of the perforations are very scruffily done but I've no way, yet, of being able to point to the two different perforators.

2nd Printing (late 1970, black on 10 different coloured papers).  Added the 7 1/2 wink too late, the Weeping mock turtle and the 4 winks postage due.  The one and three wink Alice heads were printed in blocks of 4.  The sheets were box-rouletted 13 1/2 (but I don't know who by, the printers maybe as this issue seems to be always perforated.

3rd printing.  (mid 70s - a date anyone?) Coloured designs on coloured paper.  6 colours of stamps on 4 colours of paper - so 24 variants of each stamp for completists to look for!

Should we move this discussion to a new thread?  It doesn't seem to have much to do with reference materials any more!

Since it is Gerald King´s birthday today (81 years young) I thought I would post a very interesting letter I have in my collection.

The letter is 52 years old (1964) and written by Gerald to Ken Lake (Ken Lake was one half of Lake and Brooks who produced the 'Year of the Child covers'. Apparently Ken died about 4 years ago).

The letter clearly shows Gerry's wit and humor.

I have tried to update the information for the different printings (Wonderland 1865 and Looking-Glass Land 1871)... including input from Keith in previous messages…:

1st Printing (1965):

34 stamps (36 stamps, if the variants of the “National Wildlife Week” and the “Freedom from Hunger” stamps counts), Large format, Printed in black only on various coloured papers, Perforated 11 3/4" (poor attempt at perforating the first issue) and Imperforated.

Printed by: Red Lodge Press (Only the first printing was done by them).

Some of the printed sheets from Red Lodge Press were sent to Harry Rooke (Cinderella journalist for the magazine "Stamp Collecting Weekly") who in turn sent them to someone who had a perforating machine.  They came back with at least two thirds badly perforated right into the design. Gerald never used this person again as he by this time had been contacted by Dave Stirling who had his own machine and was much better at it.

2nd Printing (Last half of 1970’s):

Large format, black ink on 10 different coloured papers, Box-rouletted 13 1/2”.

Printed by: TBD

New stamps: The “Too Late”-stamp (7 1/2 Winks), the “Mourning”-stamp (2 Golden Slumbers), the “Postage Due”-stamp (4 Winks), the “Alice’s Coronation”-stamp (20 Winks), a strongly retouched “2nd Botanical Congress” (2 Golden Slumbers), the “Health”-stamp (4 Winks and 2 Winks), the “Political Prisoner’s Relief Fund” (Half Wink) has been “relieved” of another ¼ Wink.
For the “Freedom from Hunger” (leg of mutton) issue the well-known major plate flaw (Cracked Plate) in pair with normal, the flaw now appears on the left-hand copy of the stamps.
Furthermore, the 1 Wink and the 3 Winks Alice heads were printed in blocks of 4.

3rd Printing (Late 1970’s):

To provide additional definitives for use on covers, a special plate was laid down providing blocks of nine of the 1 Wink and the 3 Winks values, with designer’s imprint in the lower left corner “Dodo, Lory & Co.”.
Frame breaks permit plating of all nine positions of the 1 Wink, but in any case each stamp, as the 3 Winks, bears code letters: AA- AB – AC / BA – BB – BC / CA – CB – CC etc.
Furthermore, the third stamp (code letters AC) of the 3 Winks is inverted.

The printing was carried out by “Storyville Publications & Co.” of Walthamstow, with black ink on matt surface-coloured paper, imperforate, in 10 colours (white, pale blue, yellow, pale orange, dark orange, pale green, dark green, pink, red and mauve).

The layout of the third printing part sheet:
The denomination was cleared from the 1 Wink design, and new values created. These were laid down in two rows of five stamps, denominations being 1/2, 1/2, 2, 2, 4, 5 (all in Winks) in the top row, and below 1/2, 1/2, 8, 10, 20 (all in Winks) and the “Political Prisoner’s Relief Fund” (Half Wink). Two different types of the 1/2 Winks denominations (diagonal fraction bar versus horizontal fraction bar).
Above the two rows, the two blocks of nine and between the blocks a new high-value definitive of 1 Golden Slumber, and flanking the se-tenant block another new design, a super-sized 30 Winks Jabberwocky Centennial value.

The book “Alice Through The Pillar-box” (from 1979) mainly shows 1st Printing stamps and 2nd Printing stamps, and the last couple of pages of the book also gives examples of the 3rd Printing stamps.

4th Printing (1982):

Smaller format (compared to the previous printings), Coloured stamps on coloured and white papers, Perforated 11 3/4" and Imperforated.

Six different authentic ink colours of the Victorian period: deep shades of blue, green and carmine, reddish-brown and claret as well as black.
Four different paper colours: white, buff, pale blue and rose.
24 varieties of each stamp.

Printed by: The Phantasmagoria Security Printing Co.

Catalogue covering the 4th Printing stamps: "Curiouser and Curiouser" (January 1982)

5th Printing (2000):

Smaller format (compared to the previous printings), Multi Coloured stamps on white papers, Perforated 11 3/4".

Printed by: The Phantasmagoria Security Printing Co.

Catalogue covering the 5th Printing stamps: "The Millennium Collection" (June 2000)

I'm working on adding things to my collection which come from the pretty much definitive collection put together by Gerry's old friend the late Ken Lake.  The write-up of the 2nd printing adds some details to Jesper's work above (and changes some of it too).

The printing was in late 1970 (not the late 1970s).

The 10 paper colours were deep green, sap green, pale blue, lilac, scarlet, rose, salmon, orange, yellow and white.

Typewritten provisional overprints exist which are not listed in Gerry's catalogues.  HALF WINK (on the 1 wink Type 1) and ONE WINK (on the 3 winks Type 2).  The half wink provisional was caused by the increase in the TOO LATE rate from 7w to 7 1/2w.  I don't know why there was a 1 wink provisional.  None of these provisionals exists postally used.  I suspect they are very rare indeed!!

The printer was Bone of Great Queen Street, London WC1

The rouletting was by Trade Finishers (Walthamstow) Ltd. London, E17.  A google search suggests that this company still exists.

For referece material on the wonderland stamps you cannot do better than the articles in the past two Cinderella Philatelists. Snark Island follows in the first magazine of 2018. Non-members of the Cinderella Stamp Club can buy individual issues from http://www.cinderellastampclub.org.uk/publications.html" rel="nofollow - their web site .

As Gerry says " I must congratulate you on this; probably the most comprehensive coverage to date."[/i}

Maybe it can be helpful to someone else too...
