The Penrose Annual was published from 1895-1982 and was a review of the graphic arts published in hardback book form. It was a highly prestigious publication about printing and graphic design and was often written by leading graphic designers. I have a couple of issues and if you are in any way interested in graphic design then you'll find it a fascinating publication. Certainly in later years included in each issue were actual examples of various forms of printing including wine labels, holograms and greetings cards. For the 1954 annual Harrisons (with the permission of Her Majesty's Postmaster-General) produced special black print versions of the coronation stamps as a special sheet, duly perforated, for the annual. The backs of the stamps state 'REPRODUCTION ONLY' and 'No postal or philatelic value' in 2 lines. The sheets are highly desirable and I have managed to acquire one:

I can remember the Penrose Annual from my days at art college when it was a great guide to styles and trends as well as technical innovation - and an occasional source of inspiration when deadlines were looming.

I didn't know about the 1954 stamps edition though, thanks Daniel - I suspect that by the 70s when I was there, that sheet had long since been purloined by some light-fingered bookworm.

Thanks. I have found that with patience and perseverance I have manged to find many items on my want list and at very good prices. Originally, I had a set of singles and was pleased enough to have those and then came across this complete sheet on ebay. I duly bid on it and won with little competition. It helps if the seller doesn't really know what he or she is selling Big smile
