Germany as a unified country happened relatively recently; 1871 to be precise. They had bandied together in opposition firstly to Napoleon, and latterly against the aristocrats. But even after unification there were German speakers in Austro-Hungary. They formed local associations such as the Bund der Deutschen in Neider-Osterreich (Lower Austria around Vienna) in 1903. This and many other organisations arising at the time seeked to promote and preserve the German way of life. They were very patriotic. The Lower Austria's association's motto translates as 'what is German remains German, and what was German will again be German'.
They issued fund-raising stamps, all seemingly priced at 2 Heller, and the Leidermarken (Song stamps) are the most colourful. They show scenes depicting some of the popular folk songs of the people, and generally show happy people and couples, enjoying a good life. They were printed in mixed sheet, one of each stamp, in a few different issues. Each issue seems to have had different printings with differing perforations etc. There are approximately half sets from two issues |
