This cover and miniature sheet commemorate the Italian Balloonist Paolo Andreani, 1763-1823, first balloon flight over Italy in 1784. This cover was flown on a Montgolfier balloon in 1972 in Florence and is shown front and back.

Auguste Piccard, 1884-1962, was a physicist, inventor, balloonist and explorer. His twin brother, Jean Felix Piccard, also a scientist, was also a balloonist and either or both was/were the inspiration for Star Trek: The Next Generation's Jean Luc Picard (now in a new Star Trek TV series, Picard). Auguste was also the inspiration for Herge's Professor Cuthbert Calculus (see the image on Wikipedia) in The Adventures of Tintin.

In 1932 he set an altitude record of 16,201m in Denbendorf, Switzerland. This 1972 balloon flight was the same as the Andreani one as above.
