These Wirral Scout Post stamps were on sale at a garden centre when we visited last December. This year we were perhaps a bit too early when trying to find Xmas presents there, so will have misse them for 2019. No big deal as they have opted fopr self-adhesives!

I suppose unless you happen to have a vintage perforator knocking around locally, self-adhesive is better than nothing.

Actually, vintage perforators are quite easy to find!  In the "good old days" (of pre-World War 2), every small town printer had one, as they needed to perforate receipt books, and invoice forms that they printed for their clients.  (Not to mention stamps, on the offchance they had such an order.)

This is why the Mafeking Seige local stamps were able to be perfed in such a way as to look like "normal" stamps.  The printer had a foot-operated perforator.

But these days when commercial printers all use "offset", they have perf wheels that can be inserted on the machine as needed.  These are really "roulettes".

But if you visit any print shop, ask the boss if they still have an old treadle perforator, and if he would sell it to you.  Usually they would be keen to get rid of it, to free up the space.  Mine dates from 1895 (Rossback, made in Chicago) and still works well.
