Sandy Island 2019 minisheet, including the Cat posties on one value!

Sandy Island, an increasingly-well-known Pacific outpost, has had its distinctive stamps for several years now, and in 2019, issued this attractive set to show some peculiar animals. Here is the minisheet, which comprises several values, including the cat mailmen of Liège.

===

The left block of stamps were inspired by a true event. It took place in 1879 in Liège, Belgium. The city fathers attempted to train 37 cats (imagine that!) to deliver mail from the central post office to outlying villages. What the cats thought about this, and what they did and didn't do, is lost in the mists of time. All we know is that the scheme didn't turn out exactly as planned.

The stamps at the right show a family of lions on the savanna.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae; it is a muscular, deep-chested cat with a short, rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species. With a typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm they are larger than females at 160–184 cm. It is a social species, forming groups called prides. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although some lions scavenge when opportunities occur, and have been known to hunt humans, although the species typically does not.

Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight. In the Pleistocene, the lion ranged throughout Eurasia, Africa and North America but today it has been reduced to fragmented populations in Sub-Saharan Africa and one critically endangered population in western India. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern.

One of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture, the lion has been extensively depicted in sculptures and paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature. Lions have been kept in menageries since the time of the Roman Empire and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoological gardens across the world since the late 18th century. Cultural depictions of lions were prominent in the Upper Paleolithic period; carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves in France have been dated to 17,000 years ago, and depictions have occurred in virtually all ancient and medieval cultures that coincided with the lion's former and current ranges.

Sandy Island 2020 Issues

Sandy Island 2020 Issues

Finally, the 2020 issues of Sandy Island have arrived at the Sandy Island Agency headquarter! While the main shipment from Chan Hui Shudian Printing SA, Waikoa Island, South Pacific to Sig. Vaccarezza, sent in late 2020, is presumed lost, a small number of sheets were sent from their reserves to us, which arrived today. This series was the last set of Sandy Island stamps designed and ordered by Fabio Vaccarezza.

- The 0.50 Rupee stamp shows an American Bison overlooking the prairie plains. The animal is described as a "Great Collector", probably not of stamps though.
- The 0.95 Rupee butterfly stamp is a reissue of the 2019 issue, showing a Swallowtail (Papilio machaon).
- The second 0.95 Rupee stamp shows a group of tree frogs enjoying the view from the flowers of a tropical plant, a kind of "Frog's Condominium".

All three stamps were designed by the late Postmaster, Fabio Vaccarezza and printed on ungummed paper by Chan Hui Shudian Printing SA, Waikoa Island. More details on the stamps and other Sandy Island issues can be found here. They are available through Capricornia Post and selected agents.

Sandy Island 2021 Issues

In 2021, the postal service of Sandy Island was taken over by Capricornia Post Extraterritorial Services, the internationally operating branch of Capricornia Post.
Although the stamps of Capricornia Post are usually printed by yourstamps, it was decided that the newly formed Sandy Island Agency would be
supplied by both yourstamps (for definitive issues) and by Chan Hui Shudian Printing S.A., the traditional printer for Sandy Island, located on Waikoa Island in the South Pacific.

Sandy Island 2021 Commemoratives:

Sandy Island 2021 Issues

In 2021, four commemorative stamps were issued:
  • The 0.55 Rupee stamp is dedicated to the Climate Crisis, which is endangering many small islands, among them of course Sandy Island,
but also threatening important cultural monuments. Also as a nod to the late Postmaster Fabio Vaccarezza, the Italian city of Venice was selected, which,
in spite of huge investments by the state, is sure to perish in the floods by end of this century.
  • The 1.10 Rupee stamp is dedicated to the memory of the late Postmaster of Sandy Island, Fabio Vaccarezza, a great philatelist and designer of many wonderful stamps.
  • The 1.60 Rupee stamp displays a postal vehicle combine which is used on Sandy Island to distribute the mail, a small Berlingo delivery van with a canoe on top
which is used to reach coastal villages and small islands where no roads or bridges are available.
The stamp is dedicated to the takeover of postal services by CPEA / Sandy Island Agency.
  • The 1.80 Rupee stamp looks at the second major crisis of our times, the Corona pandemic. Similar to neighbouring islands like Nouvelle Caledonie,
Sandy Island was hit both by the pandemic and the economic consequences. A syringe symbolizes the Corona jab, placed over an unusual graphical imagination of the Corona virus.

The stamps were designed by the new Postmaster J.Schwarz and printed by Chan Hui Shudian Printing S.A.
They were printed on ungummed paper, in sheets of 10 for each motive, plus a combination sheet containing two stamps of each value, except for the 1.10 Rupee stamp of which four are contained in the sheet, with one tete-beche pair.
Official date of issue is 2021.12.12.

Sandy Island 2021 Definitives:

Sandy Island 2021 Definitives

In November, two Definitive stamps were issued. They show shells which can often be found at the beaches of Sandy Island.

  • 0.85 Rupees - Tritonium flandricum australis, from a 1910 lithograph by Eberhard Fraas. (Local standard letters)
  • 1.10 Rupees - Lambis truncata (Giant Spider Conch), from a 1985 etching by J.Schwarz. (Overseas light letters < 10g)
The small stamps were printed by yourstamps on gummed paper. It is planned to issue further values in the next years, with similar motives. Official date of issue is 2021.11.21.

The 2021 issues can be ordered at face value through Capricornia Post and will be offered through selected agents, too.
Capricornia Post is open to stamp exchange agreements with other stamp issuing entities and states, regarding new issues.
