Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832-1914), later 1st Earl Roberts was a popular soldier prior to the First World War. He cared for the ordinary soldier and raised money for those who had fallen into poverty. He died at the very beginning of World War I and funds were raised in his honour to further his good work.
One of the methods of raising funds was the production and sale of a long series of stamps depicting soldiers, sailors, politicians and world leaders in 1915. There were a total of 144 stamps issued in 12 sheets of 12 stamps and there were accompanying notes to go with them. In addition, 3 different albums were produced in Red Cloth, Khaki (Cloth Gilt) and Royal Blue and Gold. The stamps and albums were produced by Fawcett and Company of the Strand, London. I have acquired a complete set with reproduced notes and I am going to show them all over a series of posts. |

I didn't know about these before, thank you for posting.
Did you acquire the whole set at once or have you been buying it over time?
