Earlier this century Gerald king, in a moment of boredom, decided to produce a series of stamps for Burma working on the assumption that, instead of the rather boring real issues, they had produced stamps in line with those of neighboring India.

There are, at most, 20 sets of these.  I have been lucky enough to get my hands on one (and a set of proofs) and will be adding the stamps and postal history to the askme website in time.  I thought you'd all like a taster to keep you going.

Very interesting, Keith. Thanks for the scan. That's a nice set to have acquired and I look forward to reading more about them on askme.

What's the difference between the four versions of the 4 Annas stamp. Just colour variants?

Was there no 10 Annas stamp? Seems like it would have been a natural one to issue in the low values series.

There were 16 Annas to a Rupee, so 4, 6, 8 and 12 annas are all neat fractions of a Rupee. 10 Annas wouldn't be.

Ahh, that explains it. (Albeit that I'm not sure 6/16=3/8 is much, or any, neater a fraction than 10/16=5/8.)

If one was to ask Gerry he'd probably claim he was out of zeros when he printed them = hence no 10 Annas.

But, more sensibly, he seems to be using most, but not all of the values in the issued stamps of India which were used in Burma at the time.  So the George V set of 1911 had no 10 Anna value.  In fact, a quick skim through my SG catalogue tells me that a 10 anna stamp was not issued at any time under British Imperial rule.  Maybe it was an unlucky number; you'll need to take it up with the Raj authorities I think Jules.

The 4 anna stamps are just colour variants.  The original India set had a life of some 15 years and there are colour variants in there.  Art copying life in this case perhaps?

It would also be wonderful to hear from Gerald himself about these stamps, I see he is a member.

Is anyone here in touch with Gerald?

Which year this century were these issued Keith?

He spends most of his time glued to the TV watching snooker and eating sausages so never appears here.  But, if you are a Facebook member, you can perhaps go find my Askme page (if you can find it amongst all the other pages called Askme) and like it.  He does post there from time to time - just don't hold your breath.

I don't know exactly when they first appeared but I do have a copy of the pages of the Burma Philatelic Study Circle magazine dated October 2006 which lists all the issues and says "Recently Mr King's attention has turned to Burma.".  How recent "recently" was is anyone's guess but I'll try to find out.

As these issues seem to be raising some interest I'll move them up my "scanning and adding to the askme website" priority list.  Don't hold your breath there either!!

Gerald says "just before 2006 from memory". 2005 then.

Never say I don't spoil you.  I've added all the Burma stamps to askme and you can find them here.  I'll be adding the postal history items once my scanner cools down.
